What is the I-CAN Centre?

The I-CAN Centre is a public Internet access facility based in the Elsies River community in Cape Town. It was launched in 2015 by the Western Cape provincial government.

The I-CAN Centre provides residents with free access to internet and equips them with digital and business skills.

OurHood and the I-CAN Centre

OurHood has recently partnered with the I-CAN Centre. Through technology, we will help bridge the digital divide in many South African communities.

They are the first partners of their kind to join OurHood.  We look forward to working with them to connect our Cape Town neighbours and strengthen our communities.

Our digital divide

The 2014 statistics released by Statistics South Africa say that more than half on the population don’t have access to the Internet at home.

Our history of ethnic and economic inequality has left differences in the level of development in various communities. This has lead to disparities in access to information, communication and technology.

Many communities are excluded from advancements made in technology and the digital world.

Connected neighbours make stronger communities.  But this “digital divide” creates a gap in communities.  They cannot effectively connect to local government, safety authorities or each other.

The I-CAN Centre directly aims at bridging this gap. They provide communities with the opportunity to stay connected and keep up with digital trends.

Llewellyn Scholtz, CEO of Genesis CITI & Centre Manager of the I-CAN Centre, said that OurHood is the ideal platform to facilitate relationships with the community and local businesses and organisations.

What do they do?

We will also be working together to establish and strengthen the Elsies River community through proactive engagement with local businesses, residents and organisations.

We warmly welcome the I-CAN Centre to the OurHood family and look forward to connecting the Elsies River neighbours.
