Heritage

Heritage Month: September honours the various cultures and diversities in South Africa – from the languages, cuisine, music or any other creative expressions of our country. South Africans are encouraged to visit our heritage sites, many of which are named after struggle heroes. South Africa is also home to to eight of the 981 World Heritage Sites. Whether you try a new site, or branch out and explore somewhere new, use OurHood to get a group together. This way you can save on transport costs and get to know your neighbours.

Heart Awareness Month

Heart Awareness Month: every year, September is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle to try prevent its onset. Adopting a healthy diet, taking regular exercise, and avoiding risk factors such as smoking, drinking, drug-taking and stress. Volunteer with a neighbour at a charity such as The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, or hold a fundraiser in your community and give back to your society in a meaningful way.

Tourism Month: with summer around the corner, tourism is on the rise again. This month places focus on the importance of tourism in our local economy and highlights the many attractions to be explored by foreigners and locals alike. Why not gather your neighbours via the OurHood app and be a tourist in your own area?

Arbor Week

Arbor week – 1-7 September: South Africa celebrate Arbor week the first week of every September. It calls upon locals to plant trees as a symbolic and practical gesture of sustainable environmental engagement. As it coincides with Heritage month, special attention is given to our indigendous trees such as the Boabab tree.
