Creative marketing ideas, crazy communications skills and a strong community spirit are just a few things that have made Kim van de Geest a valuable member of the OurHood team.
Today we say goodbye to the face behind our rocking Twitter account and hand written postcards.
Kim, a Dutch, community driven intern who fell in love with South Africa, not only helped you build a stronger online community but also went the extra mile to help the poverty-stricken community of Imizamo Yethu informal settlement in Hout Bay.
After just one visit to the community, Kim knew the importance of OurHood’s top principal – strengthening communities.
In just three weeks, she managed to raise almost R30 000, through her network of friends and family, for the Silikamva High School nestled at the edge of the township.
“I just had an idea that the school was a really good school… And they’re all relying on funding and donations.
“They offer the education for free because people cannot pay for their education. I thought that was really good for the community and I believe that education is the only weapon against poverty,” Kim said.
She has since managed to buy stationery and other resources for the school.
This inherent sense of community is what attracted her to OurHood in the first place. “I found the OurHood internship through a website called Foreign Exchange. OurHood is the first company they told me about and I was interested straight away because… I like the fact that it is community centered.”
Kim was also attracted to the dynamic vibe of a Start-Up company like OurHood and it’s adaptability to new marketing strategies and changes in the economic market.
“I wanted to see marketing from a practical side… With Start-Ups we can think up an idea and do it tomorrow.”
Her creativity and interest in marketing was evident with her guerilla style marketing idea that brought “Post-It wars” to Woodstock.
Kim has been an integral part of making OurHood your best communication platform. She will always be one of OurHood’s favourite neighbours!
