BRICS is an acronym that stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

It is an organisation that aims to group the world’s leading emerging economies together and work towards increasing trade and economic growth months the countries.

“The BRICS approach is informed by the need to deepen, broaden and intensify relations within the grouping and among the individual countries for more sustainable, equitable and mutually beneficial development. This approach takes into consideration each member’s growth, development and poverty objectives to ensure relations are built on the respective country’s economic strengths and to avoid competition where possible” — BRICS 

South Africa became a member of BRICS on the 24th of December 2010. Through the partenrship South Africa has ensured trade with the countries involved and BRICS has helped improve the economic development of South Africa.  South Africa Hosted the 5th Annual meeting between the 26th and the 27th of March 2013. The summit was hosted by Jacob Zuma in Durban.

SA is currently hosting the 10th Annual Summit starting today, 25th of July, till the 27th of July 2018. The Summit is being held in Johannesburg and is being hosted by Cyril Ramaphosa.

There are over 1000 delegates, including heads of state and business leaders, who are said to be attending. The main themes being addressed in the summit are:

  1. Establishment of a virtual vaccine research platform for collaboration with BRICS vaccine innovation and development partners.
  2. Establishment of a BRICS gender and women’s forum.
  3. Establishment of a working group on peacekeeping.
  4. Leveraging the strategy for BRICS economic partnerships as linked to the fourth industrial revolution.

…though it has been said that discussion about trade war risk is probably going to be the main topic.

Above all this, a BRICS Media Forum took place in Cape Town from the 18th to the 19th of July 2018. During this time they hosted a BRICS Art Exhibition in the Cape Town Convention Centre. They are also currently hosting BRICS Film Festival in Durban, which started on the 19th of July and ends on the 29th of July 2018. These events have given South African creatives a chance to showcase their work and get recognition on an international scale.
