In light of yesterday being World Suicide Prevention Day, we wanted to highlight the start of the World Health Organisation’s #40seconds movement.
World Mental Health Day takes place on 10th October and this year’s theme is suicide prevention. Yesterday, WHO began their efforts to raise awareness as to the scale of suicide globally and what we can do to help.
Every #40seconds someone loses their life to suicide. On 20th October, let us take just “40 seconds of action” to:
- improve awareness of the significance of suicide as a global public health problem
- improve knowledge of what can be done to prevent suicide
- reduce the stigma associated with suicide
- let people who are struggling know that they are not alone.

Do you know of anyone struggling in your community? Or perhaps it is those who seem the most together, the most stable and the happiest that, in actual fact, are suffering in silence. As neighbours, we can help those struggling with mental health problems, or anyone who has been affected by suicide, by making a positive and supportive environment. A neighbour waving and asking “how are you” or, “can I help you,” or even an invite for a cup of tea can be life changing. Alternatively, you can hold a fundraiser and donate to an appropriate charity. Whether it is #40seconds, 40 minutes or 40 hours, this is an opportunity to show you care.
Don’t forget to ‘share messages, photos, illustrations and videos that are not of a private nature on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #40seconds. Include #WorldMentalHealthDay in your posts too.’
