At OurHood, our mission is to create stronger, safer and more inclusive communities, and in order to do this, we need to connect neighbours. Neighbourhoods where residents are engaged and know one another naturally enhances safety and reduces crime in the area, as well as having numerous other benefits (for more great reasons on why you should get to know your neighbours, see here).

GET TOKNOW YOURNEIGHBOURSWith our busy lives, we understand how hard it can be to find the time to connect with our neighbours, and that is where we come in. OurHood provides residents with an easy (and free!) way to connect with one another. Available on desktop, mobile browsers, and both Android and IOS apps, almost anyone can use it; but don’t worry, your cell number remains anonymous and all members have to be verified first. And unlike other social messaging apps, your are given the choice to opt in and out of groups, and choose exactly what notifications you want to receive, so you won’t be bombarded with unwanted or irrelevant information.

So you know why it is important to know your neighbours (and maybe even signed up if you are not a member already), but now you may find yourself wandering how to break the ice and really connect with them. So just to get you started, here are a few idea…

Just say hi.
This may seem obvious, but how often do you walk past a neighbour and not say anything? Perhaps you are in a rush, or maybe you are looking at your phone and have not even noticed them past – it is easily done! Next time, take moment to pause and say hello. A simple hello and wave is a great start, or if you have a little more time, why not pause to have a chat and introduce yourself if you have not done so already.

Random Acts of Kindness.
The smallest of acts can have an incredible impact on another life, and help to break the ice. Whether it is smiling at a neighbour, helping to carry their shopping across the street, or messaging a neighbour who you know is going through a tough time via OurHood, give it a go and see what difference it makes.

Invite a neighbour around for tea.
Having someone over to your house can really help to bridge that gap between stranger and friend. Rather than waiting till you next bump into them, speed things up and send them a direct message on OurHood.

Throw a neighbourhood braai.
Whether you are new to the neighbourhood, or a loyal veteran, hosting a neighbourhood braai is the ultimate way to get all your neighbours together in one place for some quality bonding. Create an event on OurHood to spread the word and make sure no one gets left out!
